This is Lyhn, the first 3D character we ever made from start to finish. We used ZBrush for sculpting, Photoshop for texturing, and Blender for shading/rendering. We modeled this character in 2012, when our anatomy knowledge was pretty basic, so there are many obvious mistakes.
We've currently rescued her and refurbished her, because we want to make some test renders to see if we're capable of making cool cinematic 3D scenes (or not), and we don't want to waste time making a new character from scratch. Besides we think she looks fine. 🤗
Aside from tweaking the base mesh and overhauling the textures from 2012 to make them PBR, we added genitals, mesh-card eyelashes, and the 3D eyes and mouth we showed you in our Realistic Humans in 3D post.
We also rigged her with Blender's Rigify.
As a final touch, we modeled her hair in Blender using mesh modeling techniques to create a nice hairstyle. We suck at making particle hair and we find mesh modeling a lot easier--it also renders faster, and we shaded her with PBR materials and Blender's Principled Shader.
EDIT: About the mesh hair VS particle hair statement we made above, we've found it's not entirely true. In 2020 we started using hair particles and it has now become very easy to manipulate, and to create gorgeous hairstyles with the tools in Blender is almost second nature. It also renders pretty fast with GPU, so we're currently using hair particle only.
She's not our best work but we love the way she looks, she reminds us of Pocahontas somehow, so in her honor srpgen has written a 🌶️ story called "THE PHOTOSHOOT", and we're going do our best to render something cool.
We're very curious to see how she'll look posed, lit and rendered! 🧐
