Discovering PBR & Substance Designer

While adjusting the Victorian Style Props, we struggled a lot with the material surfaces and the reflections of my Blender shaders, especially after adding Fresnel to the shader nodes. We weren't feeling confident that the Fresnel was giving the material realistic results, so we decided to learn a little bit about Blender’s Principled Shader and about the Physically-Based Rendering (PBR) that has become so popular.

After watching a few videos about the Principled Shader, and after talking to a friend who works for the 3D industry, we came across the widely spread Allegorithmic's Substance. We didn’t think much of it at first, but after giving it a try we fell for it 💖

We’ve been playing with the material designer, trying to author a few procedural materials, and we're very happy with the results that can be achieved by the combination of textures created in Substance Painter and the Principled Shader.

From now on we'll be using Substance and PBR for our texturing workflow. We're confident it will improve dramatically the look of our models! ✨
